Big Changes for Weibring Golf Club @ ISU

The last blog post was May 2019.  It is disappointing that I allowed that much time to pass between posts... but, my energy has been spent improving the property and operations. Since the last post, there has been A LOT of changes at the golf course!!!

So what's new?

Hole 8 after the renovation

The bunkers of course!

If you didn't get a chance to see the big changes we made over the summer of 2019, you missed out!  We received positive feedback on both the strategic changes and the improved play-ability of the high quality white sand in the new bunkers. By finishing Phase 1 on-time and under budget in August, we were able to add more additions to holes 1, 4, and 13 as winter set in.   In all, we spent $290,000 to completely renovate every bunker and add a few new ones.  This was not just removing the bad sand and replacing with new sand- we gutted every bunker and made them all better. Better shape, better strategy, better sand, better drainage, better golf!!!  We had a great team with DA Weibring and Steve Wolfard bringing world class design, Larry Denton shaping their ideas into reality, and my staff carrying the load on their backs and self installing every single aspect of the project!

We have a new Head Pro!

Laura retired and we thank her for all she did for ISU, B/N, and our golf course.  As we began our search, we weren't sure where it would lead, but Tom Szymoniak became the right person at the right time.  Tom has seen many aspects of golf management, serving at nationally known clubs such as Atlanta Athletic Club and also being trusted by some of the industries best course management companies. Tom's strongest attribute is that he had been in Central Illinois at a high-end daily fee course, leading Stone Creek Golf Club as their Head Pro, then GM.  As the family that owned Stone Creek looked to move on from golf course ownership, Tom used strong relationships with community members in Champaign, Urbana to diversify into college athletics with the U of I.  It was this combination of college athletics, strong management training from the nation's best golf course companies, and experience as the final decision maker at a high-end daily fee golf course in Central Illinois that led Tom to be our new Head Pro.  We are very excited to have his experience and you will feel his passion and professionalism as soon as you step through the doors of the shop this spring.

We have so many initiatives being implemented this winter and will share them as the weeks lead us closer and closer to the golf season. We can't wait to see you at the golf course this spring!

Thanks for reading!!

  3. Travis, you do a heck of a job with that course. I live out of state and I'm always impressed each time I come back with the little things that have been done to make the course better and better. Keep up the great work!
